a painting with bold areas of orange, yellow, blues
Helen Frankenthaler, Orange Mood, 1966

One of my assignments this past semester was to replicate a piece of artwork, focusing on the use of color, in whatever medium I desired. I have been really fascinated lately by art quilts, and I have been studying how they are made. A discovery I made was that many of them use tulle as a top layer to secure the small underlying pieces.

As I thought about how to interpret a painting in fabric, the idea of using tulle to apply color to replicate the washes and color field painting Frankenthaler used.

I decided on a base of quilting cotton, and that I would use tulle to create all the color layering.

My piece is at 1/4 scale of the original piece. I traced out the main shapes, and made myself templates. The base layer was yellow and blue, though I did end up adding green to the very corners because the optical mixes were not working as well as I hoped they would for only green.

I quilted on individual layers of tulle and cut away the outside edges, starting with a layer of yellow and blue, and then adding shading over top.

After many layers, I finished with a final layer of yellow and blue over the whole piece in the same shapes as the base layer.

To finish, I added white sashing, like a mat.
