A color theory assignment - I was inspired by Josef Albers' Anatomy of a Square series. The finished quilt is 54" square.

I selected 3 analogous colored fabrics, and then assigned a similar embroidery thread color to each. I also selected one complementary yellow color.

I designed the square embroidery in Illustrator, then used my embroidery machine to embroider out each embroidery color onto each base fabric. I then made the outside of each of my quilt blocks in the corresponding fabric to match with the embroidery. I also made one yellow block and 3 plain, unembroidered blocks.

The sashing was made with coordinating prints. I quilted around the large square blocks but didn't do any internal quilting, not wanting the thread to stand out and undermine the impact of the mutable nature of color.

The back was pieced with leftover fabrics from the front, and it was bound in a print.
